Juvederm Q & A

What are Juvederm fillers?

Juvederm is a brand of minimally-invasive hyaluronic acid fillers, injected directly into soft tissue in your face. Hyaluronic acid, a sugar that is found naturally in your body, acts like a sponge, absorbing and holding onto water wherever it is injected. This cushioning effect leaves you with firm, plump skin and visibly reduced wrinkles.

How long does Juvederm last?

It depends on the area being treated. Usually Juvederm injections in the cheek area last the longest — sometimes up to 2 years. If Dr. Griessel uses Juvederm injections to treat wrinkles or folds, expect to have optimal results for up to a year. To improve lip lines and fullness, Juvederm treatments can also last for as long as 1 year.

Are Juvederm injections painful?

Typically, no. Even though Juvederm is administered through a needle, it’s incredibly thin and virtually pain-free. You’ll probably feel a small pinch or sharp poke at the initial insertion of the needle, but that pain goes away rather quickly. Some types of Juvederm fillers are made with a built-in lidocaine formula. Dr. Griessel uses lidocaine to instantly numb the area being treated, minimizing any pain you might feel during your appointment.

If needed, Dr. Griessel also provides a topical numbing cream before starting the Juvederm injections to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Talk with her about your pain concerns before getting started.

Should I worry about any side effects from Juvederm?

Juvederm has been clinically tested and is a safe cosmetic treatment for skin impurities. Because your skin needs a chance to heal from the injections, avoid makeup, sun exposure, alcoholic beverages, and exercise, for 24 hours after your appointment. For the first week after the Juvederm injections, you could experience:

  • Pain at the injection site
  • Redness
  • Lumps or bumps
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Itching
